Republic of the Marshall Islands
Country Profile
Located in the eastern waters of Micronesia, the capital city is Majuro. The nation covers a land area of 181.3 square kilometers, with an extensive maritime territory of 2.13 million square kilometers. As of 2022, the population was approximately 41,569, predominantly Micronesians. The official languages are Marshallese and English. Protestantism is the main religion (54.8%), alongside other denominations such as the Assemblies of God, Catholicism, and various others. The country operates under a presidential cabinet system.
Development Overview
The Marshall Islands established its self-governance through a constitution in 1979. It officially became the Republic of the Marshall Islands in 1986 and entered into a Compact of Free Association with the U.S., under which the U.S. manages its national defense.
The country functions as a small island economy, possessing no natural resources besides the ocean. Due to limited land and water supply, coupled with a lack of industry and capital, only Majuro features minor commercial and service sectors; most outer islands engage mainly in household retail businesses. Endowed with abundant fishery resources, the country is recognized as one of the best fishing grounds globally. Yet, inhibited by insufficient technology and funding, its main revenue comes from the sale of fishing access rights and small, coastal fishing operations. The main agricultural products are coconuts, taro, and breadfruit.
