Country Profile

Located in Northern Central America, it is bordered by Mexico to the northwest, facing Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the east, and neighboring Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast, with the Pacific Ocean to the south. The total land area is 108,889 square kilometers. The capital is Guatemala City, which spans 228 square kilometers and has a population of about 1,220,000 people. The country has a population of about 17,840,000, plus around 3,000,000 living abroad. Major ethnic groups include the Mayan, Xinca, Garifuna, and Latino populations. Spanish is the official language, and the predominant religions are Catholicism and Christianity.

Development Overview

Guatemala declared independence from Spain on September 15, 1821, though it was still a part of the Mexican Empire. After leaving Mexico two years later, it was formally divided into the five Central American countries in 1846. Following multiple 20th-century coups, the constitutional process concluded in 1985, and the democratic period commenced in 1986 with the inauguration of civilian President Vinicio Cerezo.

The average national income per capita was approximately USD 6,329 in 2024, and the GDP reached USD 116,800,000,000, with an economic growth rate of 3.7%. The country’s main exports are cane sugar, coffee, iron and steel scrap, white shrimp, and tobacco; key imported goods include mixed alkylbenzenes, crude oil, vehicle and motorcycle parts, compressors, and polystyrene. Recently, the government has focused on tackling corruption and crime, enhancing the investment climate, and bolstering job creation through tourism, export expansion, and rural development.
