2025 World Indigenous Traditional Games Country Introductions|Canada、Japan

🇨🇦 Canada

Canada is located in North America and is the second-largest country in the world by area. Its capital is Ottawa, and its largest city is Toronto. The indigenous groups within the country include the First Nations, the Inuit, and the Métis, totaling over 600 communities and more than 70 indigenous languages, making it one of the most culturally rich indigenous populations in the world.

The Canadian government has recently dedicated itself to promoting reconciliation, emphasizing recognition, respect, and cooperation, including implementing the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, supporting indigenous self-determination, language revitalization, and the protection of traditional territories. Indigenous peoples are also actively participating in contemporary politics, arts, environmental, and sustainability issues, serving as an important force in the modern Canadian nation.

For this year’s Games, 30 representatives led by Mr. Frank Antoine, Chief of the Bonaparte First Nation, have come to Taiwan to participate and exchange with the world’s indigenous peoples.

🇯🇵 Japan

Japan is located in East Asia, composed of multiple islands, including Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is renowned for its unique culture, technological development, and natural landscapes. Japan is a country where diverse ethnic groups coexist, among which the Ainu people were officially recognized as the indigenous people of Japan in 2019. The Ainu culture is centered on hunting, fishing, and reverence for nature, possessing a unique language, embroidery patterns, song and dance rituals, and a profound view of nature. In recent years, the Japanese government has actively promoted cultural revitalization and education through the “Act on Promoting Measures to Achieve a Society in which the Pride of Ainu People is Respected” and Upopoy, the national Ainu museum, allowing Ainu culture to regain vitality in modern society.

For this year’s Games, 13 representatives led by Mr. Keisuke Okada, Senior Advisor to the Foundation for Ainu Culture, have come to Taiwan to compete, showcasing the cultural spirit of the Ainu people.
