Located in the South Pacific, the country consists of the North and South Islands and several small islands, covering a total land area of 269,652 square kilometers. The capital city is Wellington, with a total population of around 5,356,700. Key ethnic demographics are European (67.8%), Māori (17.8%), Asian (17.3%), Pacific Islanders (8.9%), and other groups from the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa (1.9%). Christianity is the main religion, accounting for 32.3%. The official languages are English and Māori.
Development Overview
The Māori ancestors settled in New Zealand after migrating from the South Pacific islands; they named the land Aotearoa, which means “The Land of the Long White Cloud.” British Captain James Cook visited the country five times in total, established settlements, and renamed it New Zealand in English. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 by the British and Māori chiefs in Waitangi on the North Island, transforming New Zealand into a British colony. In 1852, the British Parliament passed the New Zealand Constitution Act, allowing for self-governance. The country achieved Dominion status in 1907 and became a sovereign state in 1947, maintaining its membership in the Commonwealth. New Zealand’s average GDP per capita in 2024 was about NZD 80,034, with a GDP reaching NZD 425,000,000,000, an inflation rate of 2.2%, and an unemployment rate of 5.1%. New Zealand’s society is free and stable, with a friendly populace; it was ranked the 3rd safest country worldwide by the 2025 Global Peace Index. The 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index placed it 4th globally, and the World Bank named it the world’s easiest place to do business in 2020, showing both governance transparency and an excellent investment climate.
