【Introduction to Competitive Events】-Traditional Wrestling

🏆 Traditional Wrestling 🏆

Indigenous peoples’ sports events take diverse forms, mostly featuring the traditional sports in which the indigenous groups excel. The core concept is to showcase the vitality and cultural characteristics of indigenous peoples. They not only showcase athletic performance but also symbolize cohesion and unity, thereby perpetuating the culture and spirit of the peoples.

From an early stage, cultural traditions involving physical contest and power competition to train the youth were widespread among Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. Although the methods vary across different groups, physical confrontation is universally used to foster cooperation, adherence to rules, and resilience. This shared cultural background is precisely what allowed traditional wrestling to evolve into a modern sport.

Taking the Bunun, Paiwan, and Rukai peoples as examples, in the past, after the busy farming season concluded, tribal members would engage in various physical competitions, including wrestling, to strengthen their physique and enhance the youths’ ability to protect the community. These traditions continue today, forming an important competition that showcases courage, discipline, and strength.
