The capital city is Ottawa. With a total land area of approximately 9,984,670 square kilometers, Canada spans from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west, borders the United States to the south, and reaches the Arctic in the north. The administrative divisions include ten provinces and three territories. With a population of about 40 million, Canada is an immigrant country boasting high ethnic diversity, including people of European descent (76.7%), Asian descent (14.2%), First Nations (4.3%), African descent (2.9%), and South American descent (1.2%). English and French are the official languages.
Development Overview
Originally inhabited by the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit. In 1867, it was established as a self-governing Dominion of Britain through the British North America Act. Canada declared diplomatic independence in 1926, and in 1931, the Statute of Westminster granted full legislative equality, formally recognizing Canada as an independent member of the Commonwealth. The UK formally gave up its jurisdiction under the British North America Act in 1982, when the Canadian Parliament enacted the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is recognized as one of the ten largest economies globally. Its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reached USD 2.2003 trillion in 2022, securing the 8th global rank. Canada is a key member of both the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Group of Seven (G7), and is also the 11th largest trading partner in the world. Furthermore, its 4th place ranking in the 2023 Index of Economic Freedom exemplifies Canada’s highly liberalized market economy. In terms of society, Canada maintains a comprehensive social welfare system, covering unemployment insurance, healthcare, pensions, and allowances for families and disability. This system is jointly administered and financed by the federal, provincial, and municipal governments, guaranteeing the well-being and social fairness for its citizens.
